When setting up, you need to press the buttons on Sonos and it starts sending broadcast pacet to the network at the address The controller does not skip broadcast pacet.

You did enable multicast IGMP on your network router? Do you have manageable switches? There are many reasons why one might want to have a Sonos speaker on a different subnet than the controller.

Sonos speakers on a dedicated subnet/VLAN

People have asked about this before, but the answers are either wrong "it's not possible"buried in the thread or lack detail. Disclaimer: I have only tested with an already configured Sonos system.

I have not tested yet which configuration is necessary to add a new speaker directly on the other subnet. In the following examples, host UPnP defines protocols for devices to communicate with each other without prior configuration. It groups the protocols into a series of steps. The steps interesting to us are:. Looking at the messages exchanged between controller and speakers related to these steps will let us know which ports need to be configured on our firewall. When a device is added to the network, the UPnP discovery protocol allows that device to advertise its services to control points on the network.

Similarly, when a control point is added to the network, the UPnP discovery protocol allows that control point to search for devices of interest on the network. For our purposes we only need to look at the packages sent by a control device. I will explain IP multicast in the next section. For now we know that packets to address When a controller app starts, it sends the following message This requests consists mostly of standard UPnP fields.

After a control point has discovered a device, the control point still knows very little about the device.

For the control point to learn more about the device and its capabilities, or to interact with the device, the control point shall retrieve the device's description from the URL provided by the device in the discovery message. This means controllers must be able to access port on speakers to learn more about their capabilities. A UPnP description for a service includes a list of actions the service responds to and a list of variables that model the state of the service at run time.

The service publishes updates when these variables change, and a control point may subscribe to receive this information. For example, if the device description contains. NOTE: The port number is different for different platforms. The iOS app listens on portthe Android app listens on port IP multicast is a way to send a single data stream to multiple destinations 1:n.

This is opposed to unicast where the source host sends data to a single destination It's also different from broadcast, which is link-local only, i. What's nice about this is that the server doesn't have to know the actual destinations for the data stream. Instead, the clients are telling a multicast-aware router that they are interested in data for a specific address. Clients that should be reachable by a specific address form a multicast group. When the router receives multicast data, it forwards and duplicates, if necessary the data to the clients it knows about.

IGMP is the protocol for managing multicast group "subscriptions". It runs on the same level as ICMP. When a multicast aware router on the network receives such a packet on a specific interface, it remembers that there is a client for this group on that interface and will forward all packets addressed to the multicast address to that interface.

You may have heard of "IGMP snooping". This is a feature on switches to only send multicast traffic to the ports that have a host of the corresponding group connected. IGMP snooping generally only works if there is a multicast router running that periodically queries the networks for group membership, and thus the switch learns about which groups are at which ports. I'm using mrouted as multicast router, because it is part of OpenBSD's base install.Find answers to your questions by searching across our knowledgebase, community, technical documentation and video tutorials.

Multicasting, also called IP multicasting, is a method for sending one Internet Protocol IP packet simultaneously to multiple hosts. Multicast is suited to the rapidly growing segment of Internet traffic - multimedia presentations and video conferencing. For example, a single host transmitting an audio or video stream and ten hosts that want to receive this stream. In mutlicasting, the sending host transmits a single IP packet with a specific multicast address, and the 10 hosts simply need to be configured to listen for packets targeted to that address to receive the transmission.

Multicasting is a point-to-multipoint IP communication mechanism that operates in a connectionless mode - hosts receive multicast transmissions by "tuning in" to them, a process similar to tuning in to a radio.

Since this is a home setup, I also assume that your security can be a little more relaxed than an enterprise environment. After all it is your trusted network. For the sake of an example say it is Appreciate the response. My gut tells me it's something with IGMP proxy since everything else is unblocked.

Device discovery might be something simple like a broadcast, which by its nature does not traverse subnets. My impression from reading the work of others trying to solve the same problem was that IGMP Proxy would handle rebroadcasting across the subnets. OK, fair enough. Is there a simpler way to do this? Is there a way to lump folks on my guest wifi network into a specific block of IP addresses that I can set up specific firewall rules with?

Using a VLAN was my first thought, but as mentioned this is a home network and ultimately if there's someone in my house they technically have physical access to all machines. I'm just trying to have a modicum of safety and would prefer to limit access to certain IPs from unknown visitors.

Any scheme like that would provide only an illusion of security since MAC addresses are so easily-spoofable. Better to give the password to a network that is allowed to access the private devices to those whom you want to be able to access them. Alternately you could use Your gear would have to support it and you would need to know how to make that gear do that. It wouldn't be the firewall's job. Click Add 3. Click Save 2. Click Add 6. Add a rule to the VLAN subnet to allow all traffic.

I'm interested in getting this to work as well, but I am getting an error from igmpproxy. Can you confirm that you set the Interface for both to WAN? I have followed everything else in your example, but I get the following error:.

This thread is old. Just for reference, I got this to work. My vlans have their own interfaces. So using igmp proxy I get android device to succesfully use the sonos app, but IOS devices aren't working. Right now I'm back to putting all my sonos devices on the same vlan as my phones removed from the IOT vlan. If anyone has gotten Spotify Connect to wrok with sonos across vlans it would be great to know how you did it.

From what I've read and that is a lotthese Sonos devices communicate through Multicast and this is normaly done on the same subnet. My setup: The Sonos speakers are the downstream and the mobile devices the upstream. Otherwise they are blocked by default This is usually only seen with multicast traffic. I can't seems to figure what is blocking the above and apart from that, I still can't access my Sonos devices. Screenshots will be even better.

Happy holidays! I got it working for a single iOS device, but can't seem to reproduce it for any other. I "think" the discovery For the one iOS device that works I see in the logs that this device is connecting Unicast to the Sonos Speakers on portwhy it has the IP addresses of the speaker is "for now" a riddle to me. Hi Folks, unfortunately I realized the igmp proxy fails to start after the update to With the previous version everything worked fine. Now in the log the error message is: igmpproxy[]: There must be at least 2 Vif's where one is upstream.

Thats very annoying - especially since I didn't change anything. Any help would be very welcome! Thanks a lot in advance Andy. Hi Andy, Which version did you use when the proxy still worked, do you know? It sounds like a config issue, not code. Very little changed in IGMP proxying, but maybe it's related. Need to know the versions so we can pinpoint. Cheers, Franco. Hi Franco, thanks for your quick reaction! It was just the version below when it was still working, thus Is there any way to downgrade to specifically Otherwise I would assume I have to install the last image and avoid any updates, but this of course is not the preferred solution from security point of view.

Besides of this small flaw I have to say its really a great piece of software! Cheers, Andy. Ok, let's try reverting the GUI package to Small flaws in great software makes me sad, let's fix that.

And thanks! Doesn't look like Ok -- I will try if the downgrade helps. If not I will be back here soon :- Cheers, Andy. No improvement unfortunately. I have also compared the backup xml files from prior the upgrade and after. They are identical. Maybe something under the hood changed? Sorry my limited capabilities to help but I am not an expert. Please let me know if you need any further information as input.

How can I enable multicast support?

Cheers and have a nice evening, Andy. Hi Andy, I was hoping it wasn't so Some say that IGMP needs to be fixed, but looks like nobody figured this out. OK sent via PN. I will wait for the Lets hope and see.
